HELPING OUR KIDS WITH CHANGE

In our current world, our children are faced and asked to deal with changes to routine unexpectedly and quickly. For some of our students they thrive in these times, for others they struggle and need support. This week as students returned from our most recent lock down, we have seen our kids excited to be back doing things that feel routine and familiar. At home, you can help them feel like normal routines are still there when things change suddenly around them through family routines and tasks that seem like everyday things but to a child can help them to feel ok. Things like helping with dinner, cleaning, or daily jobs around the house, helping a sibling or being responsible for their own spaces in the home. At school, this is why we keep assembly and chapel running even when it is virtual and can’t be done face to face and within the classroom, we keep rhythms and routines as much as we can to support that feeling of familiarity for our kids.

As we head into the mid part of Term 3, our students are hitting that phase of preparing to move to a new grade at school the following year. For our oldest students, they are preparing to transition to high school and for our youngest they are preparing to move to Year 1. To help set our kids up for success for these transitions, we want to partner with you as we continue to build independence in your child’s day. This can be as small as ensuring they carry their own bag into school, rather than mum or dad doing it for them, or making sure our older students are responsible for their belongings and bring a hat and a charged iPad to and from school every day. These things seem small but as we all work together to help our kids grow and prepare for the next stage, I ask you to consider how you can encourage your child to take the next step towards feeling and being independent in their daily routines?

SPORT TRAINING – It has been great that even with current restrictions we are able to keep sport training happening for our kids. However, we do need to revert to some of our previous processes just during this phase of our restrictions. This means, when your child has training, no matter what sport:

  • Parents are not able to attend training sessions
  • Students will transfer from the school day to training internally
  • If training does not commence until 4:15pm parents, please drop your child at the prep entry gate and your coach will meet the kids there
  • At the end of each training session, the coach will bring students to the Prep carpark
  • Parents are to wait in their vehicles or 1.5m distance from other adults if out of the car. Parents must wear a mask if they are out of their vehicle
  • The coach will release each student out of the Prep gate, to greet their parent, once line of sight has been made to ensure students are safe and monitored in this carpark area.

We look forward to the time when restrictions ease again and parents are able to be welcomed back to spectate at training sessions but until such time, we thank you for your support and understanding of the protocols that we have in place.

100 DAYS – Tomorrow we will have a special celebration for your youngest and oldest students at the College. For our Preps they have been at school for 100 days and for our Year 12’s they have 100 days to go. Our Year 12 students will come over to our Prep area to celebrate this milestone with some activities and connection moments. Congratulations to our students!
