From Our Libraries T2 W9 2022

Readers Cup

Over the past two weeks we have had some keen readers represent the College in the Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 Brisbane Bayside Regional Readers Cup Competitions. In the weeks leading up to the competition students worked together as a team of five to read and closely study five set texts. On the day, teams competed against over 20 other schools in a trivia-style event answering questions about each of the books. Between rounds students had the opportunity to hear local authors Pamela Rushby and Michelle Worthington share stories about their writing journeys. Congratulations to Julia D, Abigail H, Elijah L, Oliver S and Grace V (Year 5/6) and Charlotte B, Rachael H, Summer O, Marizelle N and Amelia P (Year 7/8) for their excellent efforts with some very challenging questions. We also wish our Year 9/10 team well when they have their turn early in Term 3.

The Premier's Reading Challenge – Prep-Year 9

It’s fantastic to see forms already being returned for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Students need not stop at the end of the first page – they are able to come and collect extra forms from the libraries. The holidays are of course also a great time to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge - students have until August 26 to read and return their forms.

Reading in the Holidays

A 3-week holiday is a great time to read! Research shows that reading for enjoyment has a positive impact in so many areas - academic, social and well-being. It is important that students continue to read throughout their school journey, and not just in the early years. All students are welcome to borrow books over the holidays and may also like to borrow eBooks over the break. Years 1-12 can log into our eBook platform using their school email and password.

Overdue books

Often there are books in high demand from our borrowers, with students making reservations and waiting eagerly for others to return them. Please help us out by regularly sending in library books (and Home Readers) on your child's allocated day, so that your child can borrow different books and other students can have the opportunity to borrow those titles.

Chess – Junior School

Chess has continued to grow in strength during Term 2. This week we held an in-school competition with almost 30 students competing in junior and senior divisions. Congratulations to William, Lana and Boyd for placing first, second and third in the Junior division and Lemuel, Georgina and X'avier for their places in the senior group.

Chess Mates will continue to offer a lunchtime class in Term 3 – parents can register via their website https://chessmates.com.au/school-lessons/.

eSports

During the second half of the Term we have had 5 teams compete in various eSports competitions. Our Year 9/10 team competed in the QUT High Schools competition on June 3 and came away from the day with a win. We have had four teams compete in the Fuse Cup competition – Year 4 Just Dance, Year 5/6 Mario Kart, Year 7/8 Mario Kart and Year 9/10 Mario Kart – with some excellent results, including Jake from Year 6 who is off to the finals in Term 4. Next term, Year 4 compete in season 2 of Just Dance, while our 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10 teams take on Rocket League.

Book Week

The most exciting week of the year is coming up in Term 3 – Book Week! This year's theme is Dreaming with eyes open. Book Week runs from the 20-26 August (Week 7). There will be dress-up days at each campus, along with many other exciting activities. Stay tuned for more information next term.
