From Our Libraries T2 W2 2021

Opening Hours – Junior School

The Junior School Library is open from 8:15am-3:15pm. Students are welcome to change their library books outside their normal library lesson times.

Lunchtime Chess Classes - Junior School

Do you want your child to experience the benefits of learning chess while having fun along the way? Designed especially for children in Prep and above, Chess Mates classes are fun, interactive and tailored by our teachers to suit the students in each class. While your child will still learn that winning can be fun, they’ll also learn a whole lot more! In fact, chess can help your child develop socially, academically, and emotionally.

When: Wednesday 12:35 pm - 1:20 pm
Location: Junior School Library
Cost: $10 per session

To book please go to https://chessmates.com.au/school-lessons/ (Faith Lutheran College is listed under 'East Brisbane').

To find out more about Chess Mates and what they stand for, you can listen to a TEDx talk that founder Ash presented at UQ last year - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMTga50-j3g&t=7s

Coming-up – Junior School

On Wednesday, 19 May students in Prep-Year 3 will once again be joining with over a million other students across the country to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime. This year, the chosen story Give me some Space! by Philip Bunting will be read by an astronaut from the International Space Station!

Reading (and now Writing) Club – Junior School

Each Wednesday morning the Junior School Library is open from 8am for students wishing to come to Reading Club. Reading Club (as opposed to a Book Club) is simply a time for students to come, sit and enjoy reading a book of their choice. They may pair up with buddies and read to one another or sit and listen to a teacher read a story – there might even be special guests reading to them some weeks! Students are welcome to arrive any time after 8am and need not necessarily stay for the whole time if they would like to go outside and play as per regular morning routines. At the request of some of our regular club members, we will now also add the opportunity to write stories during this time.

Opening Hours – Secondary School

The Secondary School Lighthouse is open as follows:

Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 7:30am-4:30pm

Tuesday and Friday 7:30am-3:30pm

Students are asked to sign in and out if staying in the afternoon.

Half-Day Chess Coaching Clinic - Secondary School

Would your Secondary child like to participate in a half day of chess fun? Gardiner Chess will be running an in-house session from 9am-12pm on Wednesday, 5 May for Year 7-12 students interested in developing their chess skills. Students have been asked to register their interest by completing the form available to them via their email or daily notices.

Lighthouse Café - Secondary School

Canteen staff will again be serving breakfast at the Lighthouse Café on the Secondary Campus each morning between 7:45am and 8:20am. An excellent option for students coming to school early for training or rehearsals.

Homework Club – Secondary School

A teacher is available in the Lighthouse from 3:10pm-4:25pm on Monday and Thursday afternoons for basic tutoring / help with homework. Students who wish to attend must go straight to the Lighthouse after school and sign in. At the end of tutoring, students should be picked-up from the top carpark or make their way home using other modes of transport.

Research Resources

Junior School students are able to use Britannica School for research. A number of teachers have been using this resource with their students. If your child does not know the login details, please contact their teacher or the library.

Secondary students have access to a large number of research resources including newspapers, journal articles, eBooks and much more through our EBSCO databases. These can be accessed with their school username and password via the links in Student Central or on the Oliver library news page.

eBooks

Year 1-12 students at Faith have access to a shared collection of eBooks through our Wheelers ePlatforms. Download the app or read books directly through your browser – you’ll find instructions on the home pages below. eBooks are available 24/7, easily transported and will never be overdue. They are a great option when travelling, or just when students would like a change or can’t find a hard copy of a book they really want to read.
