Principal's Message T3 W9 2022

Queen Elizabeth II

We are all waking to the news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. I loved the old girl and am personally very sad on this terrible day. More importantly though, it is the first time in our lives that we are at school for the passing of such a significant dignitary who is also our head of state.

Today we lowered our flags at Beveridge Road to half-mast as a mark of respect. It is right to take the time to reflect upon this momentous occasion, to thank God for the life Queen Elizabeth II and her dedication to service. Similarly, it is a good idea to take a moment to assist our children to understand the significant nature of this special day.

It is not a day for talk of politics, republican movements or colonialism, it is a day to mourn.

Grief is like a button inside a box. There is a ball bouncing around inside the box that hits that button from time to time. When we lose someone we love the ball is really big, it takes up the entire box pushing on the button constantly. It slowly becomes smaller and only hits it the button from time to time, but the grief remains the same when it does.

Please remember there are many in our community, kids, staff and families, who will have renewed grief on a day such as this. Look out for each other, care for each other. Allow time for grief.

And take time to recall the greatness of a young 25 year-old mother of two who, in the 1950’s said,

‘I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong’

And it was long. And she did.
